Chapter Fifteen

Reluctantly, I leave the kitchen as soon as I’m finished eating. Being surrounded by all those people and that noise, however calm and orderly it may have been, was such a relief.

Expecting the halls to be just as still and empty as they have been the last few days, I’m taken by surprise when the door to the kitchen swings shut behind me and I glance up to find everything’s changed.

The hall is full of Fae as they make their way about their days. Some glance at me, nodding their heads as I stand staring dumbfounded back at them. I’m sure my mouth has dropped to the floor by now, but I can’t bring myself to pick it up.

I hadn’t realized how many of them were here … and I have even less of an idea as to how they hid themselves so well from me.

I know I shouldn’t keep staring, but they’re the most stunning creatures I’ve ever seen, and there are just so many of them.

The bright light of this place seems to emanate from them as they move throughout the halls, their gorgeous robes, dresses, and suits cascading in perfect form over their bodies.

Where Evienne has a paleness to her, although not to the same extent as myself, I can spot no other Fae like us. Their skin tones range from dark ebony and inky black to very faint pastel shades of lilac and rose … and each and every single one of them shimmers with that beautiful opalescent glow.

Forcing my mouth closed, I make my way through the halls as I continue to watch the Fae move around me. It’s strange to see so many people and for them to actually acknowledge my existence.

I think I’m starting to understand Evienne’s logic now as I find myself almost overwhelmed by the sheer number of Fae there are here.

It’s such a stark difference from the dark and lonely halls of my father’s house. Here, everything is wrapped in bright light and dipped in rainbows that glisten on every surface. As lovely as it all is, I don’t know how to handle the change and all I want right now is to be alone in one of the gardens.

As if by magic, the next hallway I slip down immediately opens up into a beautiful garden that I’m sure I’ve never seen here before. I can’t help but feel relieved as I step into it and find that it’s mostly devoid of other beings.

Taking a deep breath to calm myself, I walk out into the garden which is nothing more than a huge expanse of lavender. The smell clings to me as I run my hands through the soft purple flowers.

Out of habit, I glance over my shoulder as if I’m about to find Jinx laughing or Kai shaking his head as they watch me disrupt nature.

“They aren’t here,” I remind myself under my breath.

I’m starting to wonder if I should feel concerned by how often I have to remind myself of this fact.
